Marie Martin left Lanester behind for New York, but she will return this September with her new group for a concert on her native soil. Having triumphed during Lanester's musical showcase in the late 90's, the singer and violinist Marie Martin left Lanester and France to move to London, then New York in September 2007.
In 2010, Marie created a new group, SoNuvo, with two American musicians. "I met Seth Johnson (guitar) and Jerome Jennings (percussion), who are both originally from Cleveland, through Lee Hogans, a trumpet player who plays regularly with Prince and Jay Z. He had asked me to sing at a club in New York with his group Persuance," she explained.
An Album in the Works
The three musicians immediately clicked and now perform regularly in the United States and soon in France. SoNuvo will perform four times in September, in Caen, Paris, Melun and in Lanester at the Théâtre des Deux-Rivières on Tuesday the 14th, at 8:30 PM, for a sold-out show that already promises to be an unforgettable evening. The trio from New York is striking for its vast repertoire that blends together jazz, the music of Brazil, soul, R&B and even flamenco. The eclectic group stands out for its musical style that is simple yet complex, combining subtle melodies with well-executed rhythms. Marie brings an international touch to the group, as well as a sensational voice with impeccable rhythm. An album is in the works and should be available for the evening concert on September 14.
… Silence falls over the room, the jazz singer Marie Martin climbs the stage and begins to sing something that is vaguely North African, then hints at jazz, to finally reveal itself through its first words to be a hymn from Brittany, in one of the most beautiful interpretations that I have ever heard. With the magic of New York and the talent of this Lorientaise, the Breton hymn, which some still consider old-fashioned and still others controversial, seems for a few minutes to be more than ever in tune with today's world – a world that is open, multi-cultural, global but local all at once. As they might say in Brittany, Trugarez d'ar vretoned Nevez York!

Marie Martin, Lanesterienne, sings in New York
Capucine Bourcart, with Association .bzh , discovered a young woman from Lanester living in the megalopolis since 2007.
Jazz and Soul Singer
The 31-year-old singer from Lanester, France, now a New Yorker, told us her story: "I'm from Lanester. I moved to New York in September 2007. I came for the music. I sing a lot of jazz, soul. In France, there isn't a place or the venues for this type of music. I tried my luck in London for a year and finally I left for New York. And well, living in New York is a dream that I've had since I was a teenager. I love the multicultural and cosmopolitan aspect of the city. I've always wanted to experience living abroad in order to enrich myself with the cultures of others, with meeting new people. And New York is the perfect place for that. It's also here that, for the first time, I feel like I'm home outside of Brittany."
"Here, I don't feel judged, I feel free to be who I am and I feel like I can reach my full potential. When I first arrived, I didn't know anybody. Since then, I've met many musicians and now, I perform on stage with very good musicians, of soul, jazz, hip-hop, etc. I'm a musician, a singer, and I just came out with a five-title CD as a solo artist."
